Haynes was a social worker, sociologist, and co-founder of the National Urban League who fought for the civil rights and economic justice for African Americans. He was the first African American to earn a PhD from Columbia University in 1912. He served the Department of Labor as the Director of Negro Economics, and later as an advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
