Paulo Freire’s experiences working with Brazil’s illiterate poor informed his development of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a landmark work in the field of critical pedagogy. It challenged what he called traditional “banking” models of education that deposit knowledge onto passive students. Instead, it proposed liberating the education system to transform the student into an active and experiential learner.
