Founded in 1886, University Settlement is the first settlement house in the United States. It was established on the Lower East Side of New York City with the primary goal of assisting newly arrived immigrants in adjusting to their new life in America. Imbued with the ideals of the Progressive Movement, the founders wanted to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor by providing a community-centered space. Over the years, University Settlement has expanded its services to include educational programs, health services, housing assistance, and recreational activities.
