Benton MacKaye was a forester and an urban planner who is best known for advocating and originating the Appalachian Trail. While he was with the US Forest Service and the Tennessee Valley Authority, he collaborated with Clarence Stein and Lewis Mumford at the Regional Planning Association of America (RPAA). During his career, MacKaye focused on finding the balance between the urban environment and nature, emphasizing a reduction of sprawl, and founding the Wilderness Society, a nonprofit land conservation organization.
