Gutkind was an architect, planner, historian, and a member of the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. Before moving to the United States from Germany prior to World War II, he practiced in Berlin and was inspired by Peter Behrens and Walter Gropius of Bauhaus. His work emphasized a critical understanding of how urban developments evolved in global and historical contexts, which is explored in his book, International History of City Development.
