Henry George was an economist and philosopher who advocated for a single tax on land value to reduce speculation, poverty, and inequality. He proposed that governments should tax the unimproved value of land to discourage speculation and encourage uses for productive purposes. His 1879 book Progress and Poverty became one of the most influential treatises of the Progressive Era.
