Residents and volunteers of South Williamsburg in Brooklyn formed Los Sures in 1972 to rebuild their neighborhood after suffering from landlord abandonment, rollback of citywide services, and illegal evictions. They piloted a strategy of community organizing that took control of housing operations and became one of the first organizations in the New York to contract and operate city-owned housing. Los Sures is still actively fighting against displacement and gentrification in Williamsburg
