The conference was assembled by Martin Luther King Jr. to coordinate local protest groups throughout the South after the success of the Montgomery bus boycott. Ministers who attended the conference published several pamphlets describing the treatment of African Americans as a spiritual issue and condemning bystanders who stood by silently.
