The Image of the City

1960

The Image of the City was based on Kevin Lynch’s five-year study of Boston, Jersey City, and Los Angeles. In these urban studies, Lynch researched how the individuals perceive their immediate environments and develop mental maps. It illustrates how the individual can capture the memory of urban spaces through five key elements: paths, nodes, edges, districts, and landmarks. The book countered the role of the ‘expert planner’ by exhibiting how a layperson can equally assess and understand their surroundings.
