Established in 1888 with funding from John D. Rockefeller, the American Baptist Education Society (ABES) supported educational institutions nationwide catering to the Baptist congregation. Baptist tradition shares values with community development like community service, social justice, and civic engagement. The University of Chicago was created with the help of ABES and featured the nation’s first sociology department and a laboratory school.
