Rochester Theological Seminary

1850
Rochester
New York

Baptists in Upstate New York crowd-funded and founded the Rochester Theological Seminary to create a more urban theological educational experience. The institution was a progressive bastion that challenged the norms of the day such as being one of the first seminaries to admit women as regular students. Its alumni became important figures in social activism including Walter Rauschenbusch and Howard Thurman.
