McHarg is considered one of the most important figures of the early environmental movement as both a landscape architect and environmental planner. He introduced environmental concerns into the mainstream of planning and public policy while leading major master planning projects for the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and the Woodlands in Houston. His seminal 1969 book, Design with Nature, was a comprehensive guide to planning environments and laid the foundation for the development of geographic information systems (GIS).
