Residents and community groups of West Harlem formed the Morris Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association (MHNIA) in response to abandonment and arson. The MHNIA created the Morris Heights Health Center in the early 1980s, which is the first federally funded community health center in New York City and the first to provide out-of-hospital childbearing services in a low-income community. They later joined the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition.
