One of the earliest activities of The Municipal Art Society was to advocate for the establishment of  the New York City Planning Commission in 1938. MAS also played a key role in advocating for the creation of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965, which was established to protect and preserve historic buildings and districts throughout the city. It has organized walking tours, lectures, and other educational programs aimed at increasing public awareness and appreciation of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.
