Founded in 1913 by John D. Rockefeller Sr., the Rockefeller Foundation stands as one of the pioneering philanthropic institutions of the early 20th century. Established with a mission to “promote the well-being of humanity throughout the world,” the foundation was built upon the vast wealth of the family’s economic fortune and guided by its religious beliefs. The Rockefeller Foundation has invested in research, public health, arts, education and science, and urban planning. The foundation has also funded the construction of public housing and the creation of community facilities such as parks and schools, particularly in low-income neighborhoods. One of the first academic programs for urban planning in the United States, Graduate School of City Planning at Harvard University, was established in 1936 with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation.
