¡Nos Quedamos!

Organized by Activists Pedro Cintron and Yolanda Garcia, the residents and business owners of the Melrose section of the Bronx successfully defeated an urban renewal proposal to transform abandoned city-owned land into low-density suburban-style construction. Cintron and Garcia felt it was their right to stay after surviving the era of abandonment and decline. Using community planning, Nos Quedamos prevented the displacement of hundreds of families, raised local leaders, and promoted inclusive community development.
