A ten-acre section of Morningside Heights was slated for urban renewal by Robert Moses and the NYC Housing Authority in 1951, which included seventy-one buildings including sixty-four ‘old law’ tenements. A committee of residents organized to protest the displacement of residents from Morningside Gardens, forming Save Our Homes. While they were unsuccessful in stopping the redevelopment plans, they did secure preferential placement of displaced residents in the new development.
