The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is presently the largest public housing authority in the United States, and it was the first in the country to provide decent, affordable housing to those in need. NYCHA was founded in 1934 in response to the Great Depression, and grew during Robert Moses’ tenure aided by policies like slum clearance and urban renewal.
