Established in 1946 by Stephen and Audrey Currier, the Taconic Foundation made an important commitment to social justice and civil rights as a vital supporter of initiatives tasked with dismantling racial segregation and promoting educational opportunity access in the United States. During the Civil Rights era, the Taconic Foundation provided funding to key organizations including the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). They also supported grassroots organizations including the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, which is the first community development corporation in the US.
