The Vincent Astor Foundation started out supporting cultural foundations like the New Yok Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Ballet, however, the foundation began to shift its focus to social welfare and community development initiatives during the civil rights era. The Vincent Astor Foundation provided significant funding to support the work of settlement houses in New York City and beyond, including the Henry Street Settlement, the Greenwich House, and the University Settlement. The foundation also provided funding to a wide range of other social causes including youth development, homelessness, and criminal justice reform.
