Young was a social worker and civil rights leader who fought employment discrimination and barriers to opportunity for the historically disenfranchised. He was one of the organizers of the March on Washington in 1963 and co-authored the War on Poverty. He had influence over federal policy as an advisor to Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. He was the executive director of the National Urban League. His keynote speech at the American Institute of Architects’ National Convention in 1968 was transformative for the Institute’s efforts to diversify their profession and become more involved in community design.
