Thomas was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn and worked for several years in housing law after graduating from Yale Law School. U.S. Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob Javitz urged him to be the first leader of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. He later served as president of the Ford Foundation, the first African American to lead one of America’s major philanthropic institutions.
