The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was established as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ program. It was elevated to a cabinet-level agency, and it consisted of previous agencies that administered housing and urban policy, such as the Federal Housing Administration, the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, and the Housing and Home Finance Agency.
